HISTORY

Location of the city's original municipal waterworks, built in 1870 and incorporated a 250-foot iron standpipe, then the largest structure of its kind in the United States. The standpipe was demolished in 1913 in a general expansion and modernization of the Chestnut Street Plant. The present structure was built in 1913 and continued into the mid 20th century.
