HISTORY

Brothers Thomas Crowley Sr. and Michael Crowley emigrated to the United States from Ireland in the 1820s. In 1827, Michael purchased 399 acres of land in Lawrence Park Township, and five years later he erected this home, the Crowley Estate, on East Lake Road. The Crowley family remained in the home until 1897. Evidence suggests that the home was a station on the Underground Railroad. A tunnel was recently excavated on the property that leads to Four Mile Creek and the shore of Lake Erie. Fugitive slaves would be taken to the shore, where a boat would take them safely to Canada. After the Crowley family sold the property, the house went through a succession of owners. In 2016, the home is used as a single family home, and stands as a reminder of Lawrence Park’s earliest settlers.
