This house was constructed in 1835 by Horatio Churchill and was
immediately sold to Philetus Glass. Glass was reportedly active in he
underground railroad and it is apparent that Freeport Beach was
utilized
in some manner to accommodate slaves who were attempting to reach
Canada.
The house was later owned by Theodore Sprague, a prominent citizen of
North East Township, who used the house and nearby frame building,
built in 1905, as a summer hotel for the fishing village of Freeport.
At Freeport near the mouth of the Sixteen Mile Creek, is the site of
the first iron foundry in Erie County, founded by Philetus Glass. This
area is also known for having the first road opened by the American
after the peace with England. the road, opened by Judah Colt, in 1797,
reached from Freeport at the mouth of Sixteen Mile Creek, south to Colt
Station, near Greenfield. |
