HISTORY

The congregation of the Presbyterian Church of North East, the first organized congregation in Erie County, was organized in 1801. It was organized one night during public service and first sacrament, which was held in the home of William Dundas of North East. The congregation was established by the Revs. McCurdy, Satterfield, Tate and Boyd and became part of the "Churches of Upper and Lower Greenfield". In 1804 a small log church was built on the west side of 16 mile creek, where the North East Cemetery is today. A stone marker commemorates this spot. In 1818 a larger frame church was built on the site of the present Gibson Street Park. A third church of brick was built in 1860 on Main Street and the one in the park torn down in 1862. This church was destroyed by fire i August 1884 and rebuilt in 1885. This is the Presbyterian church that now stands at 25 West Main Street.
